Israeli Psychologist Shlomo Bentin Run Over By Dump Truck. Maybe.

BERKELEY — Authorities have identified the bicyclist who died Friday after a crash in downtown Berkeley.

Shlomo Bentin, a renowned Israeli psychology professor, was killed in a crash with a dump truck in the 2100 block of Bancroft Way west of Fulton Street, an Alameda County Coroner’s Bureau official said.

Bentin was wearing a bicycle helmet, which was shattered, police said.

Police were called to the scene at 3:38 p.m. after passers-by flagged down paramedics, who started CPR on the bicyclist, said Sgt. Mary Kusmiss. Bentin was taken to Highland Hospital in Oakland, where he died at 4:14 p.m.

After the man was hit, some witnesses asked a passing motorcyclist to go after the dump truck because they believed the driver unknowingly hit the biker. The dump truck and the driver returned to the scene and he was interviewed by police.

The accident is under investigation and police said there’s also a chance the cyclist plowed into a parked car.

Bentin was a professor of psychology and education at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem in Israel.
