There are no reports of any deaths, but authorities say two people remain trapped in the rubble, according to NBC News.

Early reports from local police suggest an industrial accident may have caused the collapse, at 22nd and Market Street, just before 11am today. A building on the block had been under construction.

Fire Commissioner Lloyd Ayers says dozens of paramedics and fire crews are on the scene working to find those trapped, and local news reports that at least eight people have been taken to hospital with injuries.

Truck driver Bernie Ditomo told NBC: “I was parked on the 21st just heading to Market Street, next thing you know it felt like an earthquake.

“I said, ‘What the hell is going on?’ My truck is totaled. I am a little dusty and dirty, but I’m alright. I am one of the lucky ones.”

Philadelphia Mayor Michael Nutter said: “I want to try and keep some perspective on this, we’ve had 12 people transported and taken from this scene, our thoughts and prayers are with them”

“As the fire commissioner indicated this situation is still active so let’s keep focus on the fact that our firefighters are actively engaged in a search and rescue operation and this is delicate and dangerous work.”

He added: “We have a significant number of personnel on the scene trying to see whether or not there are any other individuals in this building.”
