The Israeli Ambassador has branded Jeremy Corbyn’s remarks in which he appeared to compare Israel with Isil “completely unacceptable”.
A spokesman for Mark Regev dismissed claims made by a Labour source that he “had no problem” with Mr Corbyn’s comments, made at the launch of the party’s anti-Semitism report.
It came after Emily Thornberry called to apologise to the Ambassador on Thursday evening.
In remarks on Twitter the spokesman said: “Reports that @AmbMarkRegev [the Ambassador] ‘had no problem’ with @jeremycorbyn’s speech are erroneous.
“.@AmbMarkRegev welcomed @EmilyThornberry’s unequivocal apology following @jeremycorbyn’s unacceptable remarks.”
It came as it emerged that Jeremy Corbyn has been reported to his own party over his “conduct” at the launch of the report yesterday.
The party leader, who was also pictured laughing with the man who accused Labour MP Ruth Smeeth of colluding with the media, is facing criticism for appearing to compare Israel to Islamic State terror groups.
Jewish Human Rights Watch have sent a legal letter to the Labour party to trigger a formal complaint. A spokesman for the party said they are preparing a response.
