European Jewish groups railed against the Icelandic capital of Reykjavik’s decision this week to adopt a boycott of Israeli goods, with many calling the move purely discriminatory.
The New York Times got a lesson in graphics sensitivity this week, after the paper took fire for a chart that compared congressmen’s opposition to the Iran arms deal to whether or not they were Jewish.
Times Deputy Washington Editor Jonathan Weisman found himself at the center of the controversy on Twitter, after his paper published the chart on its own Twitter page and then edited it without explanation.
The original chart showed a second row next to the names of members of the House and Senate known to oppose the Iran deal, designating some of them as Jews.
The Israeli government has identified the men who carried out an arson attack that killed three members of a Palestinian family – but has opted not to press charges, the country’s defence minister has reportedly said.
The Jewish man posed as an ISIS terrorist online.
Joshua Ryne Goldberg,
a 20-year old living at his parents’ house in US state of Florida, was arrested and accused of posing online as “Australi Witness,” an IS supporter who publicly called for a series of attacks against individuals and events in western countries.
Goldberg was behind a plot to blow up a Kansas City 9-11 memorial event on Saturday.
Australian Prime Minister Tony Abbott faced backlash on Thursday from members of the country’s Jewish community over remarks he made comparing the Islamic State terror group to the Nazis.
“The Nazis did terrible evil but they had a sufficient sense of shame to try to hide it. These people boast about their evil, this is the extraordinary thing. They act in the way that medieval barbarians acted, only they broadcast it to the world with an effrontery which is hard to credit,” Abbott said during an interview with Fairfax radio station 2GB.
Rober Goot, president of the Executive Council of Australian Jewry, said it was “injudicious and unfortunate” that the prime minister had suggested that Islamic State “is in some respects worse than the Nazis,” reported the Sydney Morning Herald.
Star conductor Daniel Barenboim is holding talks to take one of Germany’s main orchestras to Iran, his employer Berlin State Opera said on Thursday, in the face of angry protests from Israel.
The opera said the plans by its Israeli-Argentinian musical director had the full backing of German Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier, setting up a possible confrontation with Israel which called the state support for the trip a “mistake”.
No injuries were reported when a Green Line train derailed on the South Side on Wednesday afternoon, but service was suspended on part of the line, according to the CTA.
The derailment occurred around 2:35 p.m. near 61st Street, but no cars of the southbound train tipped over, according to CTA spokeswoman Tammy Chase, who called the incident “minor.”
All passengers were safely evacuated but service was suspended in both directions between the Cottage Grove and Garfield stations, she said. It was not known how many passengers were on the train.
Shuttle buses were dispatched and the CTA suggested using buses 3, 4, 55 and 63 as alternates.
An emergency medical plan was called for the accident, sending six ambulances to the scene. The plan was secured within a half-hour, according to fire officials.
8-4-15 – Location – New Jersey Turnpike – Incident – Truck Hits Overpass Causing Massive Traffic Jam
The New Jersey Turnpike Authority says power lines beneath the Wood Avenue overpass across the Turnpike have been deactivated and must be removed before lanes can be reopened.
The Authority says the lanes could be closed until midnight.
A spokeswoman for the utility company PSE&G says 35 customers are currently without power because of the deactivation.
Power lines were compromised due to a fire that started after a dump truck struck an overpass on Tuesday morning near Exit 13A in Linden. One person is dead. Traffic remains backed up Tuesday evening.
Authorities say traffic was moving only in the northbound truck lanes and that damage was still being assessed.
