A vegetation fire on Yerba Buena Island led to a massive traffic backup on the lower deck of the Bay Bridge as crews struggled to control the blaze Sunday night, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The fire, located just south of the bridge, was reported to the CHP at 7:47 p.m. and forced the shutdown of two eastbound lanes on the bridge’s lower deck.
At around 8:45 p.m. a fire boat was seen dousing the blaze as it appeared to be spreading near the bridge.
Around that same time, CHP closed the bridge’s westbound off-ramp to Treasure Island.
The fire was sending up a large plume of smoke and visible flames, and caused a traffic backup that extends through San Francisco.
