The California Highway Patrol received multiple calls regarding the collision at around 6:30 p.m., which occurred on Interstate Highway 880 at 23rd Avenue.

CHP officers arrived shortly after to find a large section of fencing on both sides of I-880 and a 10-vehicle collision blocking the roadway.

CHP officials determined that approximately 460 feet of fencing had fallen from the 23rd Avenue overpass, striking a total of 10 vehicles. According to CHP officials, a Cadillac then caught fire but the driver was able to escape without injuries.

At least two people from the 10 vehicles were transported to hospitals and treated for minor injuries. Due to the debris and vehicles blocking the roadway, both sides of the I-880 were completely shut down for almost an hour as power tools were used to disassemble the fencing. A Sig-alert was issued for both directions on I-880 at 6:44 p.m., and was cancelled at 10:10 p.m.

According to the CHP, at one point traffic was backed up all the way to Interstate Highway 980. The CHP is still investigating what caused the fencing to fall into the roadway.
